Are you a parent who wants to do your part to help your kids understand the history of heavy metal?

We have a list of the Top 10 Heavy Metal Albums for Kids. This list covers a lot of ground and music styles within heavy metal. These classic shredders will help your kids go from zero to 90 in their musical prowess. They’ll be impressing their friends and complaining about your music in no time.

  1. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
    Paranoid – Black Sabbath

    Paranoid – Black Sabbath
A great kick-off for teaching your kids about metal. Paranoid is a classic album from one of the first heavy metal bands, Black Sabbath.
    Favorite song: War Pigs/Luke’s Wall

  2. Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera
Vulgar Display of Power – Pantera

Vulgar Display of Power – Pantera
If your kids are like mine, they are completely HYPED at 6am. Pantera’s sophomore release is an incredible soundtrack to pair with your brood’s morning rampage. Dimebag Darrell laws down the law on his 6-string.
    Favorite Song: Walk

  3. Dirt - Alice in Chains
    Dirt – Alice in Chains

    Dirt – Alice in Chains
Sure, most people would pick AIC’s Facelift as the best for kids to listen to, but I prefer my heavy music mixed with some great mellow grinds…and Dirt delivers! The first half of Dirt WAILS and then finishes off with the classics, Angry Chair and Would?
    Favorite Song: Them Bones

  4. Master of Puppets - Metallica
    Master of Puppets – Metallica

    Master of Puppets – Metallica
Arguably the best Metallica album ever made. Cliff Burton’s final album with the band completely shreds (RIP Cliff) ..and with the over-arching theme of the effect was has on soldiers, it’s as socially aware as it is awesome to scream along with in the car.
    Favorite song: Leper Messiah

  5. Ænima - Tool
    Ænima – Tool

    Aenima – Tool
I’ll be honest, my kids hate it when I play Tool in the car…or on YouTube… or anywhere – but I’m sure they will thank me one day. This album completely SHREDS (when there aren’t creepy interludes…and what kid doesn’t love a creepy interlude?!).
Favorite Song: Forty Six & 2

BONUS: Here’s some incredible KIDS performing Forty Six & 2

  6. Blizzard of Ozz - Ozzy Osbourne
Blizzard of Ozz – Ozzy Osbourne

Blizzard of Ozz – Ozzy Osbourne
It’s important to teach our kids that Ozzy is the Godfather of Metal. From his work with Black Sabbath, his solo work, and his ability to crank our guitarists who SHRED (Randy Rhodes, Zakk Wylde, Jake E. Lee, Mike Inez…) Ozzy embodies METAL. Take time to listen to the Ozzy’s lyrics and you’ll quickly find out that his messages are very positive despite the satanic moniker that has been hung on him throughout his life.
    Favorite Song: Crazy Train

  7. Appetite for Destruction - Guns-N-Roses
    Appetite for Destruction – Guns-N-Roses

    Appetite for Destruction – Guns-N-Roses
I can hear you all saying “This isn’t a metal album!”, and you’re right. It’s a very hard rock album with lots of bluesy overtones. Whatever you call it, the album definitely pushed the glam rock movement off the cliff all the while making heavier music more commercially viable… you’re welcome.
    Favorite Song: Paradise City

  8. Seasons in the Abyss - Slayer
Seasons in the Abyss – Slayer

Seasons in the Abyss – Slayer
The heaviest and darkest album on our list of Top 10 Heavy Metal Albums for Kids. Indicting tales of warfare, Ed Gein, and general social criticism. The speed riffs on this thrash album are INSANE and need to be recognized.
Favorite Song: Seasons in the Abyss

  9. Rust in Peace - Megadeth
    Rust in Peace – Megadeth

    Rust in Peace – Megadeth
A great concept album from this majorly neglected metal band. Dave Mustaine and company take on the topics of global war, the military industrial complex, and alien life. The time changes and lightning paced riffs are worth the listen.
Favorite Song: Holy Wars…The Punishment Due

  10. Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park
    Hybrid Theory – Linkin Park

    Hyrbid Theory – Linkin Park
“But that’s not metal, it’s rap-rock!”. This is my list and Hybrid Theory belongs on it, and it will probably be the easiest-to-consume album for your kids who have never listened to heavy metal music. Linkin Park has that perfect mix of singing, screaming, clever wordplay while delivering face melters. Hybrid Theory is their heaviest album to date, celebrate it.
    Favorite Song: Points of Authority

Honorable Mentions

Rage Against the Machine – Rage Against the Machine
Iowa – Slipknot
Pretty Hate Machine – Nine Inch Nails
IV – Led Zeppelin
Among the Living – Anthrax
